Irish Music Workshop Presents International Practitioners at Faculty of Performing Arts ISI Yogyakarta

The Faculty of Performing Arts, Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta, held a Traditional Irish Music Workshop on December 4, 2025 at the Ethnomusicology Mini Concert. This activity is part of the continued implementation of ISI Yogyakarta's international partnership program with University College Dublin (UCD), which is specifically organized by the Faculty of Performing Arts as a form of strengthening academic networks and cross-cultural knowledge exchange.

This workshop is designed as an intensive learning space that examines Irish traditional music from the perspective of history, socio-cultural context, organology, and performance practice. Present as the main speakers were two international practitioners and academics, namely Mark Redmond (Technological University Dublin) and Dr. Peter Moran (University College Dublin). Both are also active in the practice of Irish music collaboration with Javanese Gamelan.

Throughout the workshop, the speakers reviewed in detail the knowledge related to the organology of Uilleann Pipes, an Irish wind instrument that has complex playing techniques, unique mechanical structures, and distinctive and expressive sound color characters.

The enthusiasm for this workshop activity can be seen from how students and lecturers of the Faculty of Performing Arts ISI Yogyakarta compete in asking questions and discussing with the speakers. Students not only gained conceptual understanding through academic exposure, but also empirical experience through direct demonstration and discussion sessions regarding playing techniques, fingering systems, air pressure control, and performance aesthetics. Academically, this workshop contributes to broadening students' perspectives in understanding traditional music outside the archipelago. In addition, this activity emphasizes the commitment of the Faculty of Performing Arts ISI Yogyakarta in developing art education based on global insight, cross-tradition dialogue, and strengthening sustainable international collaboration.
