Overseas Immersions Program: International Collaboration between NAFA and ISI Yogyakarta

On July 2-19, 2025, the Faculty of Performing Arts, Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta, in collaboration with the School of Theatre, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), Singapore, organized the Overseas Immersions Program-an international short course program that presents a cross-cultural collaborative space in the field of traditional Indonesian performing arts.

The program officially kicked off on July 3, 2025 with lessons themed Performing Arts in Yogyakarta and Preparation for Placement Test, followed by a series of academic and cultural activities that enrich participants' perspectives. The program began with a field trip to the Yogyakarta Palace and Prambanan Temple as an introduction to the historical and cultural context of Javanese arts.

During the program, participants attend various theoretical and practical sessions that include:

  • Traditional Theater in Indonesia / Folkart Theater
  • Balinese Karawitan
  • Classical Dance in Palace Style (Basic Court Dance in Yogyakarta)
  • Yogyakarta Pedalangan (Basic Puppetry)
  • Javanese Karawitan

This session was led by lecturers who are experts in their fields, including:

  • Drs. Ign. Krisna Nuryanta Putra, M.Hum.
  • Heni Winahyuningsih, M.Hum.
  • Dr. I Nyoman Cau Arsana, S.Sn., M.Hum.
  • Silvia Anggreni Purba, M.Sn.
  • Dr. Raharja

Towards the end of the program, participants attended a Rehearsal session as an intensive preparation for the collaborative performance.

Collaborative Performance

The culmination of the event was marked by a collaborative performance on Friday, July 18, 2025 at ISI Yogyakarta's Arena Theater, featuring the results of NAFA and ISI students' artistic explorations in theater, dance, karawitan, and puppetry.

    Acting Director: Fitri Rahmah, M.Sn.
    Choreographer: Dra. Tutik Winarti, M.Hum.
    Costume Design: Dra. Erlina Pantja Sulistijaningtijas, M.Hum.

This performance is a tangible proof of intercultural dialog in the performing arts and strengthens the relationship of art education cooperation at the regional level. This program also involves the active participation of ISI Yogyakarta students as liaison officers (LO), teaching assistants, makeup and costume artists, and lighting artists.
