Supata Drupadi Theater Performance "THE BLOOD OF DURSASANA"

The Department of Theater ISI Yogyakarta in collaboration with Behind Theater Community (Teater Beta) will stage a theater performance entitled Supata Drupadi; The Blood Of Dursasana, by and directed by Rano Sumarno, M.Sn. The performance will be held on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at the Auditorium Building of ISI Yogyakarta Theater starting at 19.00 WIB.

This performance is an effort to create contemporary theater based on the traditions of the archipelago. Indonesia's cultural diversity encourages directors to create theater works that are multicultural in nature. The play Supata Drupadi, which is based on the Mahabharata, is also a response to the moral decadence that occurs in Indonesian society. The messages contained in the teachings of the Mahabharata should be used as an example to reflect on the multi-crisis in Indonesia.

Supata is an oath, Supata Drupadi means an oath from Drupadi to the people who have humiliated her. Drupadi is the Pandawa Queen, the daughter of King Drupada of Pancala. Drupadi was born out of vengeance, a deep hurt from her father to her best friend named Dorna.

Drupadi in the perspective of the Nation and State can be interpreted as Mother Earth. Respecting and serving Mother Earth means that we have preserved heaven and avoided the Nation from a miserable catastrophe. Is it true that the multiple crises that have hit the Indonesian Nation are the result of our behavior that has desecrated Mother Earth? The onslaught of problems has pushed the Indonesian people to the brink of poverty.

The language presented in the performance relies more on the local language, the language of movement and artistic symbols. Traditional songs such as Beluk Priangan specialty, Madurese traditional songThe Indonesian tradition, or Mantera from Kalimantan, is the strength of the performance style. Indonesian traditional arts have a magical power that in itself gives a deep impression. The richness of the archipelago's culture is the main inspiration in the selection of colors in each scene. Cirebon mask dance, kecak or mabasan from Bali, perisaian from Lombok, Tembang Madura, and Mantera of the Dayak tribe are some of the sources that inspire the form of creation.

The Supata Drupadi theater performance was previously performed in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in September 2013 as an Indonesian delegation at the Asia Pacipic Bereau - International Theater Institute. This performance was performed by students of ISI Yogyakarta's Theater department, with artistic director Nanang Arisona, M.Sn., and choreographer Cakil Widyanarto, M.Sn.
