JOGJAKARFEST II - "KARAWITAN IS ALL OVER THE WORLD"

Karawitan is a musical tradition belonging to ethnics in Indonesia. In Java, karawitan is well developed in different areas, having specific local characteristics and many different styles in ways of playing. There are Banyuwangen, Banyumasan, Semarangan, Surakarta, Ngayogyakarta, and many more. During centuries, the art of Karawitan has been living and spreading all over the world, and becomes one of the inseparable social dynamics and as a social culture as well. Karawitan plays an important part as a humanity language that might overcome the diversity of ethnics, classes and even nations. Therefore, in the middle of music development, Karawitan is an effective way to broaden ongoing global communication.

Indeed, with high spirit and a big challenge to make Karawitan as a humanity language, Indonesia Institute of the Arts Jogjakarta in cooperation with Java Karawitan Society will proudly present an International Karawitan Festival, holding many activities as follows:

  2. Gender Soloist Competition (International)
  3. Gadhon Competition (International)
  4. Java Karawitan Festival (international)

This is an event for dialogue about a tradition called Karawitan that we have inherited. This dialogue is hoped to help people to find the strength of the art of Karawitan as an effective language to articulate our mind struggling and aesthetic expression of Karawitan artists.

Objectives

  1. To conserve Java Karawitan Tradition.
  2. To increase the world society's appreciation to Gamelan and Java Karawitan work of art.
  3. To build a process of transmission and dissemination of Java Karawitan.
  4. To increase Java Karawitan artist creativity in creating tradition gending.
  5. To build a communication forum and interaction among artists, observers, and Java Karawitan all over the world.

Performances of Karawitan groups from Banyuwangi, Banyumas, Semarang, and foreign karawitan groups.
The Committee will be responsible for the accommodation, meals, and local transportation in Yogyakarta during the festival.

JOGJAKARFEST II 2012 " KANA KENE KARAWITAN "

The art of karawitan is a musical tradition shared by various ethnic groups in Indonesia. In Java, the art of karawitan has developed in various regions with distinctive local features and different performance characteristics. There are Banyuwangen, Banyumasan, Semarangan, Surakarta, Ngayogyakarta, and others. For centuries the art of karawitan has lived and developed everywhere (kana kene karawitanIt has become an integral part of the social and cultural dynamics of its society. Musical arts have emerged as a language of humanity that tends to overcome differences in ethnicity, class, and even nation. Thus, in the midst of musical advancement, karawitan has become one of the hopes to deepen the ongoing global communication.

In the spirit and challenge of making musical arts a language of humanity, Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta in collaboration with the Javanese Karawitan Society will hold an International Karawitan Festival containing activities:

  1. Book Review
  2. Solo gender competition (international)
  3. Gadhon competition (international)
  4. Javanese Karawitan Festival (international)

This event is a dialogue with the traditional karawitan works that have been passed down to us. It is hoped that this dialogue process will help us to rediscover the power of karawitan as a language that effectively articulates the inner struggles and aesthetic expressions of karawitan artists.

  2. Increasing the world community's appreciation of gamelan and Javanese gamelan work
  3. Establishing a process of transmission and dissemination of Javanese karawitan
  4. Enhancing the creativity of Javanese musical artists in creating traditional gendings
  5. Building a forum for communication and interaction between artists, observers, and lovers of Javanese music around the world.
